'Knocking in' a cricket bat is the process by which the fibres of the playing surface are compressed.

This is done for a couple of reasons:

It helps with the longevity of your bat - compressed fibres are less likely to crack when making contact with the ball.
Helps improve/smooth out the performance of your bat.

At Cricket Express, our Mt Eden and Christchurch workshops are set up to knock bats in.

This involves:

Removing the face covering (where applicable).
Lightly sanding the face, and then applying linseed oil to the face.
Running the bat through our press with the roller that is closest to the shape of your bat.
Hand knocking, which involves checking the bat over with a bat mallet (looking for soft spots), focusing on the toe and the edges.
Boning the edges of the bat to help prevent edge cracking or indentation.
Steps will be repeated until we are satisfied that your bat is knocked in and ready for you to start using.

This process can take a while during our peak periods. Please allow at least one week for your knock in to be complete.
